As we cap off Pride Month, we are pleased to share a community-curated list of resources on campuses and beyond. We invite gender justice advocates in community organizations and at Canadian post-secondary institutions to read, engage and implement action plans that support and affirm 2SLGBTQIA gender-based violence survivors with the help of the resources below. We hope these resources will inspire action through Pride Month and beyond.

This is a living document, and by no means complete, as there are so many great resources. To honour the labour that went into curating these resources, Courage to Act asks our community to add resources and share actions inspired by this resource guide. You can email these to anoodth@couragetoact.ca.

*In this resource, we use 2SLGBTQIA to include anyone who identifies as part of the community.

*For a more complete list of terms, you can download copies of The 519’s Glossary of Terms, the TransFormed Glossary of Terms well as QMUNITY’s Queer Terminology Glossary.

Resources to Learn, Support, and Advocate

  • This article, Canada’s queer rights movement exists because of Black people - but that history is often ignored, by Olivia Bowden explains how Black queer Canadians have been at the forefront of protests and activism. Pride has historically left out Black voices, and returning Pride to its roots means challenging anti-Black racism in meaningful ways.

  • Queering Sexual Violence: Radical Voices from Within the Anti-Violence Movement is an anthology that puts queer, transgender and gender non-conforming survivors at the center of the anti-violence movement and creates a space for their voices to be heard.

  • Two-Spirited Podcasts, is an audio story-telling series curated by Dr. Margaret Robinson, aims to collect and share stories about Indigenous Two-Spirit history, culture and identity, and spark conversations about diverse Indigenous sexual and gender identities.  (Margaret is a two-spirited bisexual Mi’kmaw scholar whose ancestors are from the Lennox Island reserve in Prince Edward Island).

  • Review the findings from the National Inquiry on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and the 230+ Calls for Justice in the Final Report of the National Inquiry which includes 2SLGBTQIA-Specific Calls for Justice

  • 2SLGBTQIA+ Inclusive Trauma-Informed Care webinar by Jenna MacKay for CREVAWC. 2SLGBTQIA peoples experience many barriers in accessing healthcare and social services. This webinar provides an introduction to trauma experienced by 2SLGBTQIA individuals and explores how trauma-informed care and practices may be tailored to more competently work with 2SLGBTQIA individuals.

    • Take Action: After watching this webinar, we invite you to reflect on how you can advocate for and implement trauma and violence-informed care (TVIC) practices in health settings on your campus.

  • The TransFormed Project: Addressing Partner Violence from Two-Spirit, Nonbinary and Trans Perspectives is a bilingual, community-based research and action initiative led by METRAC: Action on Violence in partnership with the Centre Francophone. The Project’s goal is to remove barriers to health care and social services for Two-Spirit, Nonbinary and Trans survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV). This collaborative project brings together community members affected by IPV, researchers, health and social sector professionals of multi-service agencies with mandates to address IPV through prevention and intervention strategies.

  • Trans Care BC has developed and curated resources and educational opportunities to support health professionals to provide the best possible gender-affirming care to trans individuals and their families. Visit their site for more information.

  • Providing Trans-Affirming Care to Sexual Assault Survivors is a free evidence-based curriculum by trans-Link. Developed and evaluated in collaboration with trans community members and their allies, it helps build knowledge and skills in the provision of trans-affirming sexual assault care.

    • Take Action: After engaging with this curriculum, consider how this information can have wider applicability in your practice as a frontline GBV campus worker, or as a general healthcare or social service provider in a health setting on campus.

  • Students’ experiences of discrimination based on gender, gender identity or sexual orientation at postsecondary schools in the Canadian provinces, 2019 (Released by Statistics Canada on September 15, 2020). The Students Experience presents findings on the prevalence, characteristics and impacts of experiences of discrimination on the basis of gender, gender identity or sexual orientation among Canada's postsecondary students. Using data from the 2019 Survey on Individual Safety in the Postsecondary Student Population, it explores the experiences of students aged 18 to 24 at Canadian institutions (17 to 24 for students living in Quebec). The context in which discriminatory behaviours occurred - where they happened, who was responsible, and who was around - provides insight into actual and perceived equality on campus.
